Lindsay Thompson gained popularity in 1972, as Education Minister, for personally delivering the ransom to the Faraday Primary School kidnappers.

June 1981 he was elected Premier shortly before Rupert Hamer’s retirement.

The Thompson Government accomplished a lot in a relatively short space of time (10 months).

During his Premiership he dealt with an a number of industrial crisis, when Melbourne’s firemen went on strike and truck drivers cut off milk supplies, forcing Premier Thompson to invoke the 1958 Essential Services Act.

Other achievements of the Thompson Government include the gradual opening of the City Loop Train Line in Melbourne and the opening of Newport D gas fired power station.

A champion for Education in Victoria, Lindsay Thompson was the longest serving Minister for Education in Victorian history.

Lindsay Thompson died on 16th July 2008.
